Nintendo Switch, Top 5 Multiplayer Games
by Samuel Kalenga on Aug 11, 2024
For decades, gaming consoles have been a popular part of the entertainment technology pantheon, giving players of all ages their share of graphically rendered and interactive worlds to explore and engage with.
There is a variety of products and systems that cater to different audience pockets: at one end of the spectrum lie dedicated gaming machines, optimised for maximum graphical fidelity and entertainment goodness – these are tethered to the home, and are unsuitable candidates for portability; at the opposite end, handheld systems, pocket-sized game machines, allow the player to indulge themselves during commutes, waiting at airports, or take their ‘serious’ gaming on the road.
The currently popular Nintendo Switch falls into a still relatively unexplored niche: if представляет собой портативную версию приставки, позволяющую использовать игровой процесс как в портативном режиме, так и в домашнем (например, подключив к телевизору дополнительное оборудование). Gaming machines have reached a remarkable level of power, the graphics can be nothing short of breathtaking The Nintendo Switch’s combination of a portable console with a modus operandi that allows for both on-the-go play and functioning as a regular console at home has won over a wide audience.
We evaluate the Nintendo Switch as a product designed to fill the void between the home console and portable device spaces, as an expert opinion on the right product for the broad centre of the market. Research and hands-on testing look at whether the Switch is as good as advocated for its advertised role in moving seamlessly from solo to social, stationary to mobile experiences. Does the product follow through on its branding as different? Our goal was to answer these questions and make an educated guess about the future of gaming consoles along the way.
Top Nintendo Switch Consoles
After scrutinising the market we’ve compiled our favourite Nintendo Switch consoles, propelled by a passion for games that can be played either solo or with multiple players, and hardware that is rich in features and high in quality. We’ve included consoles to suit many players’ requirements, from ‘must haves’ to handheld gaming, or an incredible array of exclusive titles.Nintendo Switch OLED
But if you’re after a family console – one to play with while in bed, in the bathroom, even on the loo – then the Switch OLED is absolutely magnificent, and easily the most flexible gaming device you can buy.Pros
- Vibrant 7-inch OLED screen for stunning visuals
- Enhanced audio and a wide, adjustable stand for immersion and convenience
- 64 GB internal storage for ample game downloads
Cons
- Premium price compared to the standard model
- Battery life remains unchanged from previous versions
- Limited upgrades for those who own the previous model
Playing outside has never been so good. Movements of characters are blithe, vibrant and exciting on that huge OLED screen with vivid colours and rich contrasts. On the train, in the bus, at home snuggled in bed, who cannot resist the temptation to immerse oneself in one’s favourite virtual world? Nintendo is definitely on the side of human flexibility, adjusting experiences to suit the cadence of one’s lifestyle.
It has a large 64 GB of internal storage, so filling it up with downloads from the digital store is easy – and thanks to the system’s improved audio, no matter if you’re playing in a busy coffee shop or alone in your bedroom, the soundscapes of virtual places will be lush and believable. The Nintendo Switch OLED makes for a great replacement system and an ideal entry point into portable consoles as a whole.
Switch It Up!
Ultimately, we peg the Nintendo Switch as a good buy for anyone after a gaming console that works around their lifestyle.Pros
- Versatility to play in various modes: TV, tabletop, or handheld
- Multiplayer gaming made easy with detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Portability allows for gaming on-the-go
Cons
- Limited battery life compared to some home consoles
- When in high demand, certain games can be pricey
- Joy-Con controllers may feel small for those with larger hands
The Nintendo Switch spans both home console and portable system, combining … solo play and sharing the experience with family and friends in a two-player co-op, all of which can happen at home, at a friend’s apartment, or – most importantly – on a multihour bus ride to an unfamiliar city.
We love the inclusivity of the local multiplayer, including the simple lift of a Joy-Con to have instant two-player games. The Switch also makes it easy to chain together up to eight consoles at a time for family-sized gatherings.
Overall, what we’re left with is the conclusion that the Nintendo Switch is a good buy. It’s portable gaming that doesn’t require a specific place or setup for enjoying; it’s a reliable companion for travel and switching off, and it’s also the star of a dynamic group game session.
Switch Lite - Blue Variant
Photo supplied by the authorWe believe that blue Nintendo Switch Lite is the best head-to-head option for those who want to play mainly on the go.Pros
- Great for gaming on the go with a convenient compact size
- Vibrant new blue colour offers a fresh aesthetic
- Supports a wide range of Nintendo Switch games in handheld mode
Cons
- Lacks connectivity to a TV, limiting display options
- Internal memory may be insufficient for some users
- Some users report less than optimal battery life for certain games
An example of this is Nintendo’s sleek Switch Lite that was designed with gamers who travel habitually every day in mind. The light weight (275g) and compact portability make it a helpful tool for gamers who need to play everywhere, not just at home. The important point here though is that the entire library of games that are playable in portable mode on the original Switch is playable on the Switch Lite as well.
The new blue version is a stunning little addition in terms of its look, contrasting visually with the device in a delightful and fresh way. It is a different, very pleasing colour that smacks of a different and individual taste. The distinctive choice of colour, and the fact that the gaming experience can be visually modified in this way shows a good amount of attention to detail. Nice job there.
Some things become commonplace but this seems a good way of keeping the experience visually fresh. And so, our final opinion: we think that the Switch Lite in blue is a perfectly good addition to the Nintendo family – if you’re a gamer who remains seated on the bus, and are happy with a handheld-only gaming experience, then it’s a colourful and capable device. The drawback isn’t enough to put us off – for anyone who wants to game on the go, it’s a decent investment.
Switch Lite - Turquoise
We think you’ll like the Nintendo Switch Lite – Turquoise if you need a gamebox with dedicated handheld mode.Pros
- Ideally suited to gaming on the move due to its compact, lightweight design.
- Enhanced portability with a solid battery life for prolonged play.
- Inherent compatibility with an extensive library of Switch games designed for handheld mode.
Cons
- – lacks the detachable Joy-Cons and TV connectivity of the original Switch.
- Smaller touch screen could be less appealing for those used to larger displays.
- The absence of HD Rumble means potentially less immersive gameplay experiences.
And if you’re a gamer and travel often, the Switch Lite is another portable option from Nintendo that feels more natural in the hand than the standard Switch, with its contours and excellent selection of colours.
It’s perfect for a long journey or just lounging on the sofa at home. And this is what Nintendo appears to have been going for with the Switch Lite; something that thinks deeply about portability, on-the-go ease of use. What it doesn’t necessarily replace is the larger, fancier Switch. By all accounts it would be an excellent choice for someone looking to game while in motion.
And for whom its rugged design might suit a ‘go-go-go’ lifestyle, and whose demanding finger gymnastics it excuses by its built-in, unbutton-less controls. Based on the shape, Nintendo is clearly thinking about heads and hands and fingers more than arms or wrists. It is thinking about a particular type of commuter or consumer of play: the kid, perhaps.
Super Smash Bros Ultimate
We can give Super Smash Bros Ultimate an unequivocal recommendation as a complete and fun fighting game, and the best such game for casual and competitive players alike.Pros
- Offers a vast roster of characters
- Provides both single-player and multiplayer modes
- Delights with high replayability
Cons
- May be challenging for younger players
- Some may find it similar to the previous version
- Could be overwhelming due to the breadth of content
Super Smash Bros Ultimate on the Nintendo Switch features a roster of characters from all across the franchises, so you can battle as your favourite hero or villain. Multiple layers of gameplay let players get deep, but the game is accessible for newcomers as well.
The myriad of game modes – from solitary adventures to chaotic four-player brawls – makes it a welcome addition to any Switch library able to engage players’ competitive or casual sides. Clearly, one of the best things Super Smash Bros Ultimate has going for it is a degree of longevity.
With so much included in the standard release, and with the promise of further DLC to come from Nintendo, there’s a strong case to be made for anyone thinking of joining the roster. Mind-numbing design aspect for some players? Tick. Same old, same old? Tick. Fun and a strong addition to the Switch? Tick again.
