These devices represent a level of domestic convenience and energy efficiency that would’ve seemed like the stuff of science fiction only a few decades ago. smart home products cover everything from self-programming thermostats to lighting devices that can create ambience and augment security Almost everything in a smart home is designed to operate automatically using a set of predetermined rules; many are able to respond to user preferences and be manipulated through the convenience and familiarity of apps or voice control. If you are looking to bring smart equipment into your home, you should check that it is compatible with existing systems and other smart products. Is the communication protocol – Wi-Fi, Zigbee, Z-Wave – suitable in this case to enable a smooth and integrated connected experience? Are security features in place not to intrude other attackers into your home network? What about user-friendliness and technical support offered by the manufacturer of the product? Tapo Smart Plug
Overall, we believe you could do a lot worse than purchasing the Tapo Smart Plug as an easy, inexpensive way to make your home smarter and get better access to all of your devices.
Pros
- Straightforward setup and management with the Tapo app
- Versatile compatibility with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant
- Schedule and timer features for better energy efficiency
Cons
- Lacks energy monitoring capabilities
- Indoor use only, which limits placement options
- Not suitable for high-consumption devices like air conditioners or EV charging
Having the power to turn my home into a smart home with some tiny, clever gadgets would be the real benefit of jumping on the AX3600 bandwagon, and I was soon on the case. Plugging in a lamp and setting up the Tapo Smart Plug and the lamp in the app took less than five minutes. I already had an Amazon Echo, so turning on and off the light at the command of my voice was a neat trick, albeit one that would never get old. Sharing access with other family members was another plus – finally we could all switch on the heating on before reaching the front door. Coming home to a comfortable space is an advantage we all appreciated, especially in winter. The thing that really struck me was the timer. Setting the coffeepot to start up as soon as I get out of bed is now part of my morning routine – I know, it’s a small thing, but that coffee is a bitter tonic unless it’s freshly brewed, and it makes my morning a little more pleasant. However, it’s worth noting that if you want to keep tabs on your home’s energy usage or plug outside devices in, this probably isn’t the plug for you.
Tapo Smart Plug
A smart plug with energy monitoring shouldn’t be something you skimp on. In short, this is a must-buy. The Tapo Smart Plug with Energy Monitoring retails for $29.99. Rectangle digital alarm clock with morning information via Shutterstock.
Pros
- Scheduling abilities simplify daily routines
- Energy monitoring can help cut down on electricity bills
- Compact design avoids hogging multiple outlets
Cons
- Limited by indoor use only
- Motor/compressor support restrictions could be better
- Absence of EV charging capability may be a drawback for some
The Tapo Smart Plug worked perfectly after we plugged it in and followed the app instructions to pair it to Wi-Fi. Controlling anything plugged into it was as easy as hitting buttons in the app – and that made Away Mode really easy. The plug itself doesn’t block adjacent outlets (an issue in some places with very limited outlet space) Tracking energy use is another advantage. We’re getting a better grasp of our energy use patterns. Because the plug allows for real-time consumption, we can now make better choices about when and how our electricity usage occurs. Voice command via Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant is the cherry on the cake. Yep, it’s really convenient to shout ‘Plug’ at the device. And, based on our experience, it was responsive to the command – the smart plug could switch with our choice of commands on either the Smart Life or Smart Home app for our smart home ecosystem. We’ve used smart plugs before, but this was our first experience with Tapo. We really liked the compact device and the utility of the app. It was missing high-power support for devices such as air conditioners and electric vehicle (EV) chargers, but we think for most of the plug-in needs of the typical home the Tapo Smart Plug offers an excellent solution.
Splenssy Smart USB Adaptor
We recommend this smart adapter for those who want to make their USB-powered devices smart without much hassle.
Pros
- Seamless integration with voice assistants
- Highly portable, pocket-sized convenience
- Simple, user-friendly scheduling capabilities
Cons
- Only suitable for USB-powered devices
- Single USB port may limit connectivity
- Some users may find the setup instructions small and challenging to read
After recently buying the Splenssy Smart USB Adaptor, it’s been easy to turn everyday items into smart devices. And the ability to turn power on and off to USB devices using our smartphone is now the norm. The other night, in bed, I realised that the living room lights were still on. A call to ALEXA on my smartphone saved a trip downstairs. The scheduler function of the adaptor helps us to deal with power consumption in a reasonable way. We can schedule the electric fan to start when we will arrive home so that we can come back to a cool room but the air-conditioner does not run all day. So, although there are a few caveats (it won’t work across your network as a whole, so you’ll still need the WiFi connection for simple stuff such as watching iPlayer, for example) as far as we can see, the ‘catch’ here is that the Splenssy Smart USB Adaptor is a good solution for one device that happens to have a USB power source, but it’s not particularly awesome at managing multiple devices – unless you buy a bunch more adaptors, of course. That, plus the slight initial irk of having to read the instructions (small print on the documents provided was a bit annoying for non-techy owners, but it’s a one-time thing) is really all we can say against it. Given the limitations of power in all hardware, what the Splenssy Smart USB Adaptor provides you, and enables you to do, is frickin’ awesome. In short, if you want to turbo-boost a USB-powered device with voice control and scheduling, this little dongle could make it a contender – just double-check that it ticks the right boxes for you before adding it to your smart home fleet.
ONEWISH Smart Plugs
With these added to our home infrastructure, we can heartily recommend the ONEWISH Smart Plugs as a good and dependable choice if you feel adventurous enough to try getting your home internet-controlled.
Pros
- Streamlines with an array of platforms and requires no additional apps
- Scheduling feature is a game-changer for daily automation
- Setup is quick, and sharing with the family enhances convenience
Cons
- Requires the purchase of a separate hub for full functionality
- Limited to a 2.4 GHz WiFi network, which may not suit everyone
- Some might find the price point a bit steep for a 4-pack
Connecting one of these smart plugs to our system required little more than a few taps in the app, a QR scan, a press of the assign button and a couple of seconds – done. With HomeKit compatibility on the table, the plugs automatically work with both Alexa and Google Home, meaning we could switch ecosystems with no hassle. We set our coffee machine and living room lights on timers, and the dawn blend of coffee and bedside ambiance swept us away. It was a fair dilemma, though, that a central hub of some kind was needed to enable the plugs to be at their best – my 10.4-year-old surviving Google Nest Hub came in handy, though do factor in the extra spend if you don’t have an existing Hub or similar product. And while we were confident that the 2.4 GHz limit wouldn’t prove to be an issue in our wireless hamlet, that might not be the case for those living in crowded 2.4 GHz spaces, or for those who want the lower latency speed of a 5 GHz connection. When I talked with friends about the buy, many were shocked at the price. We could see the utility in each plug being so versatile, and keeping all of those different functions in one app instead of hopping around between them. But ultimately, when it comes to getting smart, you need to decide what matters most in a plug. ONEWISH Smart Plug: It’s feels like a cheap plug, but it works reasonably well. We’ve had it in the chiropractic office for about a year Visually, these have the second-best (after Amazon Alexa) integration and styling, and that counts for a lot with smart devices. The ONEWISH Smart Plugs look good in your home. The plugins are cross-platform and simple to set up. You won’t always get the day-to-day automation. I never rely on any of these smart devices on a daily basis for more than a few days before having to troubleshoot something, but it’s just a fact of life with smart devices. I can count on this plug working with the least troubleshooting overall.
