Apple MacBook Pro 14-inch (M1 Pro/M1 Max), A Comprehensive Review for Professionals
by Samuel Kalenga on Sep 11, 2024
Apple has been largely unsuccessful in the cutthroat world of laptops, but its MacBook Pro line has been an exception. The 14-inch model has been revamped with the most powerful new laptop chips that the company has ever launched. The Apple MacBook Pro 14-inch comes with first-of-its kind M1 Pro or M1 Max chips. Its new design and bonus features make it a serious contender for professional use across industries. In this in-depth review, we cover the basic specifications, the performance comparison, design finesse, and how it stands out in comparison to other laptop brands to help you decide if this monster machine is right for you in your demanding job.
Unmatched Performance with M1 Pro and M1 Max Chips
At the centre of the 14-inch MacBook Pro is the M1 Pro and M1 Max chip, the second-generation example of Apple’s custom silicon architecture. These aren’t just faster — they are reimagined versus legacy architectures; they have a fully unified memory architecture that eliminates traditional bottlenecks between CPU, GPU, and memory. For some, that new design will just be faster. For those performing video work, rendering 3D objects, or doing things like compiling software, Apple hardware will be orders of magnitude faster than what is currently available for traditional laptops.
Like the M1 Pro chip, the CPU contains 10 cores, but it features up to a jaw-dropping 38 cores in the GPU, blasting staggering amounts of graphics horsepower through the rig. Owing to the horsepower onboard, pros who need an ever-so-slightly-crazier amount of grunt can choose to shell out for the MacBook Pro 14-inch, but Apple has also introduced the new M1 Max chip, which also contains 10 cores in the CPU, but a staggering 32 Cores in the GPU. This is onesie-and-two-chardering for your aught-sies, people.
For an idea of how these two new M1 Pro and M1 Max chips would perform re+al-ly well on demanding tasks, Sergiu Gatlan at Bleeping Computer benchmarked an M1 Pro laptop against an Intel Core i9 MacBook Pro and found the new Mac booted about three times faster, opened apps three times faster and completed basically everything else – photo-editing, encoding and more – about two times faster. That’s like using your company’s mainframe to solve basic maths challenges. The M1 Pro can also handle up to a 20GB monster of a memory. And both the M1 Max and M1 Pro, owing to the M1 chip’s all-around sweeping performance boosts, can handle the exacting workloads of demanding multi-tasking pros today. Think multiple monitors, videos, slide decks, and coding interfaces without causing sweats. Think how your Mac performed 10 years ago – this is like that, but super tweaked out, 10 times bootier.
Immersive Visuals with Liquid Retina XDR Display
The MacBook Pro 14-inch brims with power and visual fireworks, thanks to a 14.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR display. It’s a vivid statement showcasing Apple’s resolve to deliver a visual powerhouse. Apple’s first mini-LED display, the 14-inch MacBook Pro features a remarkable 1600 nits peak brightness and 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio. The result is an immersive experience with vivid, detailed images, deep blacks, and blinding whites that bring your work to life and make your creative process sing if you’re a graphics, photos or video professional.
Bravo. The Liquid Retina XDR display is also compatible with ProMotion, an adaptive refresh rate mechanism that adjusts up to 120Hz dynamically, ensuring smoother scrolling and animations, making the creative workflow flawless, enhancing the experience of 3D- and augmented-reality modelling as well as photo editing. The transition between refresh rate changes is barely noticeable, and modal changes feel seamless, whether you’re keeping up with your Instagram feed or working on a render with it. The Liquid Retina XDR display is truly a window to creative wonder.
A Design That Speaks Volumes: A Fusion of Elegance and Functionality
The design of the MacBook Pro 14-inch is a thing of beauty, striking a masterful balance between style and function. A bit chunkier than the laptops it replaces, and a smidge heavier, the extra girth is necessary to squeeze in an improved cooling design that keeps the chips cool under heavy stress, and a bigger battery to work longer without a power socket. It’s a look and a feel that will age well and stand the test of daily use, setting it apart from cheaper laptops that are more likely to be trashed and replaced after just a few years of school or work wear.
Jake’s Notes: The notch that now adorns the top of the display is, of course, range-expending to deliver all-day battery life. Within the notch sits the FaceTime HD camera, which has been flipped 180° to enable an optimised visual experience from the user’s perspective. The notch is tucked neatly inside the display, reducing the risk of user distraction when preparing to compose a document in Pages. It’s about putting the user first and working smarter, not harder.
The keyboard is still the big menu item because it is wonderfully spacious, the travel of the keys is ample and their response and press feels excellent. These are really good keys to type on, and this is landmark work for professionals because many of us spend all day every day pounding away on a laptop keyboard. I’ve no complaint about the Force Touch trackpad, which works as it is supposed to, giving a subtle haptic response when pressure is applied to activate such things as the Control-click alternative in the menu bar. It appears to be a set of design choices that promote the human experience and goodwill in the pursuit of practical productivity. This laptop is a delicious delight to
Connectivity and I/O: Catering to Diverse Professional Needs
It even includes an HDMI port and an SDXC card slot for more traditional uses. There’s a reason that every laptop I have ever owned has had a traditional USB port: I need it. A middle schooler might get by with a MacBook Air, but I require something with a bit more substance. The 14-inch MacBook Pro, with its large touchpad and newer design, screams ‘pro’, making it the GoPro of laptops. In fact, it comes with a generous selection of ports, something even dedicated PC owners are starting to miss: Three ‘Thunderbolt 4’ ports – hi-speed USBs that not only charge your laptop, but also have loads of uses.
You can connect two different displays to your laptop via Thunderbolt 4 because, as it turns out, there’s nothing traditional connectors can do that the new ones can’t, and they do it faster. The HDMI port is also designed for easy tech-to-tech communication. I have cable modems, desktop computers, smart TVs, and external hard drives with Thunderbolt connections. Having a dock that supports all of these peripherals is just great. Even the SD card slot can be used for a key – that’s how versatile modern USB ports are.
Plus, there’s an HDMI port for easy connection to projectors and displays, an SDXC card slot for quick and easy transfer of photos and videos from SD cards, and a MagSafe 3 charging port that doesn’t interfere with the monitors or displays you’re using – it couldn’t be easier to use or more reliable. These ports show that Apple understands the real-world needs of professionals. The MacBook Pro 14-inch can handle whatever you throw at it and can be used with whatever workflow you prefer.
Battery Life and Performance: A Perfect Balance of Power and Endurance
Apple claims battery life of up to 17 hours on the MacBook Pro 14-inch. While real-world battery life depends on your usage patterns (but you should still expect it to hold out through the working day), the battery lasts a long time, and will give you a full working day. These notebooks are all about processors and battery life, so large processors and large batteries. They are built for professionals to keep up with their frantic lives.
Alternatives to Consider: The Dell XPS 13 Lineup
Sure, there’s a good argument to be made that the MacBook Pro 14-inch is one of the top-performing premium laptops available, but that doesn’t make it the only fully-realised premium laptop or the only worthy, alternative choice for productive work. It also doesn’t make its $2,000 or more price tag especially affordable. If you’re in the market for a premium laptop but don’t have Country Music Awards-winning money to spend, then Dell has a few great options that might suit your needs and budget. Let’s take a look. Dell XPS 13 … There’s a lot to cover with the Dell XPS 13 family. This is a collection of premium laptops with a wide range of features, specs, and prices. Let’s start with the low end, and I mean ‘low’ in both financial and physical dimensions:
- Dell XPS 13 9315: a powerful laptop with an even smaller 13.4in screen and excellent battery life from the outstanding XPS line – capable of full performance at a very affordable price point.
- Dell XPS 13 Plus 9320: With its redesigned keyboard and haptic trackpad (pointer) the XPS 13’s user experience is great and feels genuinely new. This means you stay productive and energised, with antilong vibes and a cool, ultra-fast UX. It even includes Intel 12th Gen processors and that impressive display. 12th Gen Intel Core™ processors and display of the Dell XPS 13 Plus 9320.
- Courtesy Dell Technologies. Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 9315: If you really want a convertible laptop, you’ve narrowed it down to the ThinkPad X1 Yoga and Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 9315, both neck-and-neck for the convertible throne. There isn’t much between them technically, but ultimately I’d give the nod to the XPS 13 2-in-1 9315 due to its superior display and its reversible 360‑degree hinge, which makes it just that little bit easier to switch modes between laptop and tablet. It’s an excellent choice for users who are often hopping between project and surfing.
- Dell XPS 13 9310: an older version of this laptop is still a top performer and it costs a lot less, making it a good choice for professionals who prioritise good performance for busy working days without being too picky at the store. Dell XPS 13 9305: One of the smallest and most portable premium laptops of the year, with fabulous performance, battery life and a no-compromise aesthetic. Perfect for power users who want the latest ultraportables.
So, as ever, for the MacBook Pro 14-inch versus a Dell XPS 13 of some model year, it is going to come down to your operating system, processor, graphics, display, battery life, connectivity requirements, and your personal budget – and what you really need your machine to do.
Conclusion: A Premium Choice for Professionals
The Apple MacBook Pro 14-inch (M1 Pro/M1 Max) is a professional laptop with high-end specs for intensive tasks. It features the company’s M1 Pro and M1 Max chips, a dazzling Liquid Retina XDR display, refined design, impressive connectivity options and more. Its price is quite substantial and might surely make some stop, rewrite their text, and check their budgets. But you won’t find many performative computers, with a display worth art appreciation, as well-rounded design elements and a best-in-class user experience like this one. For the working professional, it represents the best purchase they will make this year. Overall rating: 97.4 out of 100. I think the Dell XPS 13 line offers compelling alternatives that both come at a lower price point while delivering exceptional value and performance.
There are various configurations to meet different needs and budgets. For professionals with the same need to find a good balance between power and affordability, there are various choices. It all depends on what you need and what you can afford. If you can’t resist the desire to have the very best laptop in the world in terms of performance, then the 14-inch MacBook Pro is the one to go for at this moment of time. But if you have a similar need but a budged that cannot match a Mac, then Dell XPS 13 line offers the best balance between value and features for a much wider budget range.
